Rethinking seam allowances as a parameter to your patterns

Seams allowances are necessary for every sewn garment. It’s so much neater to construct and modify your patterns with net dimensions in mind and add these allowances as a parameter to your patterns.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. We start by adding seam allowance of 1 centimeter to most pattern edges.

  2. We add a 4 centimeters allowance to the lower side.

  3. At the bottom hemlines, we actually use the hem command to automatically get 4 centimeters of seam allowance with the seam corners we need for a hem.

  4. On the side we’ll use a more fancy seam corner, the “slant step”, with a value of 2 centimeters.

  5. Finally, have a look at what we do with this tricky detail for the seam corner where the two front panels will stitch up. We use the “square next” and “square previous” seam corners to have a perfect flat seam and no bulk after stitching.

That’s how PolyPattern gives you one-click control and accuracy with your seam allowances.
